A CUARTA PAREDE SEMINAR

ONLINE CRITIQUE AND PROGRAMMING

Experimental film has always pulled for exhibiting films in their original format, as the act of projecting film is one of its pillars of foundation. However, the experimental is not at odds with the evolution of technology. This year, the 2nd Critical Seminar seeks to emphasise the online world as a space where experimental film should continue to expand in search of new audiences: whether through film criticism or film programming.

A Cuarta Parede returns to the (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico to continue theorising in experimental film. Because this is the tenth anniversary of the Mostra, the 2nd Critical Seminar extends beyond the dates of the festival itself with an ambitious proposal. The seminar, organised by A Cuarta Parede and (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico with the support of Acción Cultural Española, will include theory sessions, round-table discussions and projections.

Students will have the opportunity to publish their texts, writing and audio-visual content in A Cuarta Parede and will have the magazine’s support in editing their texts.

  • Session 1

    Saturday 06/01 | 10:30 – 12:00 h | Sala de Prensa Afundación

    By Stefano Miraglia

What lies behind the act of curating an online catalogue of images in movement for the global community? To answer this question, we will address the themes of cinephilia, distribution and reception, art and critical thinking from the point of view of two case studies, selected readings, and Miraglia’s personal experience. One of the case studies will be the Italian night-time television programme Fuori Orario, starting from the base of the idea (and ideals) which it has spread over the last thirty years in terms of experimental programming. We will cultivate critical thinking about the world of experimental film, specifically in terms of its practical and social aspects. In this sense, toward the end of the session, we will ask ourselves: What can we learn from the world of contemporary art (which is still so far away, and so close!). The session will end with a specific criticism exercise in the field of the image in movement.

  • Session 2

    Saturday 06/01 | 12:30 – 2:00 pm | Sala de Prensa Afundación

    By Brais Romero

Founded in 2011, A Cuarta Parede is the first film criticism magazine in Galician language. Created in parallel with the birth of Novo Cinema Galego, the magazine has created space for all film expression, from the most experimental to the most commercial, always taking special interest in shed light on Galician cinema. In this session, we will see the evolution of the magazine over the past few years, as well as aspects that go beyond, from the very organisation of the team to some of the problems that arise when working in film criticism on an online format and from Galicia.

  • Session 3

    Saturday 06/01 | 6:00 – 7:00 h | Sala de Prensa Afundación

    By Stefano Miraglia

    Practical session

In this session, employing the materials posted on the Moving Image Catalog website (Movimcat.eu), students will have the opportunity to come into direct contact with programming hypothetical film series. From the search for a central idea to the compilation of a bibliography to support the viewings and the provisional planning of content and online distribution, this session will be dedicated to the most practical part of programming (difficulties, problems, advice) in an experimental and online environment.
