SINAIS EN CURTO

PROGRAM

SINAIS EN CURTO

Sinais en Curto invites us once more to discover or review some of the most interesting works made by Galician filmmakers in the last year. A territory which never seems to lack inspiration to create audiovisual works outside the canon. The journey we propose this year traces a sort of subterranean history of migration, a key of the identity and the spirit of this land. A tour that starts on the San Simón Island, where the celebration of Sinsal festival inspired the creation of a piece that goes beyond the record towards poetic and evocative lands. Ilha, by Alexandre Cancelo (also in Sinais with 7 limbos, co-directed by Berio Molina), creates and recreates through an antique sound device the voices of an uncertain past. A auga branca, by the veteran Margarita Ledo, brings us the echoes of someone who left the land for never coming back, and who remembers Galicia and its white waters from Extremadura. Migration from the perspective of the present is what Stockroom, by Sol Mussa Juane, approaches, with the shadow of Brexit haunting Europe. A piece that manipulates video images unfolding them and giving them another dimension, showing how today’s migrant people live. Uluru, by the filmmaker, writer and researcher Alberte Pagán, is a turning point in the program through its construction of a possible architecture of space through cinema, and of the present memories of a trip to a sacred place. We come back to Galicia with Cómo desaparecer, by Carlos Martínez-Peñalver, a way in which returning is a way of disappearing. In Rexistros. Xeografía de San Sadurniño, Adrián Canoura portrays the empty spaces thal left those who left, through his sensorial experiments with analog video. Irmandade, the new work by Helena Girón and Samuel Delgado, closes the program. With their distinctive esoteric halo they make a portrait of the ones who stayed, in a quest of the essence of the spirit of the past revolts of a combative people.

  • ILHA

Alexandre Cancelo, Spain, 2019, video, 10 min.
The echoes of an island remain in space and memory. Voices resonate, alive. A moment and a place, the alive are shadows that walk across the faded landscape of the cove. The history settle in the present. History project its cry. Three women troubadours. A device that catches the voice. A painter that brings back color. “They are fortunate islands, they are lands without a place. Where the king lives waiting, but if we start to wake up, the voice shuts up and there is only the sea.”

  • A AUGA BRANCA

Margarida Ledo, Spain, 2019, video, 5 min.
A portrait of Santa Mariña do Monte, this well organized parish where water overflows and disappears, where the Virgin of Hope has a double in the chapel that does not resemble her, where there were parties, there was death and there are offerings. A place that looks at us with the limpid eyes of a cow.

  • STOCKROOM

Sol Mussa Juane, Spain, 2018, video, 12 min.
Stockroom is a documentary short film made through an experimental process. It combines footage recorded with a small camera from London exteriors with the atmosphere of the inside of a work stockroom where workers spend their breaks. It deals with political topics such as the big change the city is suffering because of Brexit, and how this affects its citizens and its migrant collective. It is told from the subjective point of view of someone that lives the situation. In a visual level it puts into play the abstraction to talk about memory, changes and intimacy.

  • ULURU

Alberte Pagán, Spain, 2019, video, 7 min.
There’s no way of escaping Uluru’s magnetism. Taka Iimura, Paul Winkler, Phil Hoffman, the Cantrills — enough images of the rock. I came to it with no intention of filming or taking pictures. But once there it was impossible to resist the rock’s magnetism, that huge red wall full of history and songs. Uluru is smaller, simpler and lower than the neighbouring Kata Tjuta, but even so it draws you into its core, it invites you to become one with it, to sink into it. Native land, cathedral of the Aṉangu.
Images taken with a mini iPad, following the 11km perimeter walk going clockwise and under a temperature which reached 107ºF.

  • CÓMO DESAPARECER

    Carlos Martínez-Peñalver, Spain, 2019, 16mm to video, 5 min.
Joel decides to depart towards an unknown territory, only leaving behind a few 16mm reels as a hint. An encrypted message, the glimpse of a journey towards uprooting and towards the quest of a new link to nature.

  • REXISTROS. XEOGRAFÍA DE SAN SADURNIÑO

Adrián Canoura, Spain, 2019, Hi8 to digital video, 15 min.
    With Consuelo Picos.
Some trees, some animals, lights, colors, spaces…
A sensorial navigation through the villages of San Sadurniño, where seeing is retaining-perceiving, where the eye is not contaminated and enjoys the adventure of perception.
Quoting Brakhage, “How many colors are there in a field of grass to the crawling baby unaware of ‘Green’? How many rainbows can light create for the untutored eye? How aware of variations in heat waves can that eye be?”

  • IRMANDADE

Helena Girón and Samuel Delgado, Spain, 2019, 16mm to video, 9 min.
A brotherhood of spirits is hidden beneath the layers of time. After the handwritten descriptions by Vasco da Ponte, we look for a mythical past that resonates in a subterranean way over a landscape full of invisible presences that are activated and that come back to life every time we think about them.
