DESBORDAMIENTOS

STEFANO CANAPA

Born in Torino, Italy, Stefano Canapa lives and works in Paris since 1999. He has been active in the field of analog cinema and its possibilities since the late 90s. He is part of Z.U.R (Zona Utópicamente Reconstituida), a collective of artists devoted to visual arts, theater and cinema, he is also an active member of the artist-run lab L’ Abominable and in 2007 he founded, together with Yoana Urruzola, the LIC, Laboratorio de Investigación Cinematográfica, in Montevideo. Since the early 2000 his work is affiliated to different cinema fronts: installation, films and film performances, works that have been present in a number of international festivals (from Locarno to Rotterdam, Oberhausen, Toronto, Marsella or Cinéma du Réel, among many others), and that form an investigation in progress around the particularities of the analog film format together with sonic arts.

This is the direction that this performance with the musician Antoine Birot takes, a work that combines a cathodic rays tube and celluloid, pure electrical signals and analog film. Wavelength is a research around the wave concept that explores the scope of an electrical signal manipulating its frequency and amplitude; repetition / destructuring, accidents / crepitations dialogue with the particles of photochemical emulsion in perpetual movement. The images and sounds that we will feel are generated through a hand made low frequency generator, and then manipulated using that same generator and three 16mm projectors during the performance. Sound and light waves to vibrate in overflowing and overwhelming communion.
