DESBORDAMIENTOS

MALCOLM LE GRICE

If you can talk about such a thing as “classics” of performance film, without a doubt, at the top of this hypothetical list would be some of the pieces that you can see in this session dedicated to the performative and multiscreen 16mm works of Malcolm Le Grice.

Castle 1 and Horror Film 1 deconstruct and amplify the event of projection, each in its own way: Castle 1, breaking the illusion through a lightbulb in front of the screen that lights up from time to time; Horror Film 1 bringing the body of the artist into play, to split the beam of coloured light from three different projectors into different shades of colours: a new visual experience using the basic elements of projection.

Meanwhile, Berlin Horse is a work whose beauty joins together with a study of film material and time. Using his own 8mm footage and that of a found film from the beginnings of cinema, Le Grice refilms and manipulates a hypnotizing loop, as hypnotic as the sound loop that Brian Eno created for the piece, which is displayed with two projectors. Threshold, on the other hand, is a piece that brings together the reflexive use of the optical printer with the possibilities of colour permutations, building, through 16mm triple projection, a profound and complex piece in which the study of the possibilities of film and projection unite in an intense visual experience.
